A group of prominent Igbo professionals led by a former Central Bank of Nigeria governor, Charles Soludo, under the auspices of Nzuko Umunna today visited Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in Kuje prison. After the meeting which the group described as honest and fruitful, called for the immediate release of Kanu.



The group also called the state governors where IPOB members were killed to open up inquiries on the massacres and for affected state chief judges to open coroner inquiries into the killings.

Other members of the group who visited Kanu include renowned economist, Dr Pat Utomi, Tony Nnadi - Secretary general of LNC, Udenta Udenta - National secretary of Alliance Democracy, Emeka Ugwuoju - Chairman South-east, South-south professionals, Collins Ugwu, Law Mefor, and Ferdinand Agu.

The group later converged at the Chelsea hotel in Abuja where they relayed the feedback of their visit, and issued the statement during a press conference.

Kanu was arrested in October 2015 and subsequently detained by the Buhari led Federal government for treason. He was arraigned before Justice Adeniyi Ademola at a Federal High Court in Abuja. The judge granted him bail which the federal government refused to implement. The IPOB leader has since been held in a prison in Abuja despite several court ruling in favor of his release from detention.

Soludo, Utomi, 6 other stakeholders paid a historic visit to Nnamdi Kanu in Kuje prison.
The former governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Chukwuma Soludo, on Tuesday, February 28, paid a historic visit to the leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra Nnamdi Kanu.
Soludo who was accompanied by renowned economist Pat Utomi alongside six others were at the Kuje Prison were they met with Kanu and three of his co-accused.
While the purpose of the visit is not yet clear, NAIJ.com gathered that the visit was made under the umbrella of Nzuko Umuna, a coalition of Igbo group.
Sources told NAIJ.com that the group cuts across all the major groups in the South-East including those in diaspora.
Also Tony Nnadi, the secretary general of the Lower Niger Congress who was part of the visit told NAIJ.com that the group will work with all aggrieved Igbo groups
Nnadi said: "We have announced a process, on January 1, 2017, the LNC rolled out a registration of three million volunteers who want a referendum."
"The matter now is how to put a date for the referendum and go to vote," Nnadi said.
